School Census

Under Virginia law, all public school systems in the state are required to conduct a school census every three years to verify the number of school-age children who reside in their jurisdiction. The school census benefits all Arlington County taxpayers by reducing local taxes required to keep school divisions operating. Based on the last school census conducted in 2005, Arlington received approximately $2,300 for each child reported.

APS must count and report to the Virginia Department of Education all children ages five (5) through 19, including:

  • Those who attend APS or a private school;
  • Children in the military, hospital or reformatory;
  • Home schooled children;
  • Other children (ages 5-19) not enrolled in a school or academic program.

Congressman Jim Moran encourages everyone to respond to the 2008 School Census.

APS also counts the number of children who are under the age of 5, which will be used to estimate future needs for classroom space, teachers and materials
