What does REEP do?

REEP provides language and lifeskills instruction that prepares adults to use English in their roles as parents, workers, and community members. REEP is a recognized leader in Adult ESL, known for its work in Family Literacy, curriculum development, and writing assessment.

REEP is a grant-funded program within the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education. Primary funding comes from Arlington County Government supplemented by state, federal, private, and foundation funding. Our mission is to provide for the education and employment-related needs of adult English language learners who live and work in Arlington, Virginia. Our philosophy embraces the adult learner as a stakeholder in the education process. We believe that our learners should have a voice in the instruction that they receive. This voice enables us to serve individuals better and to respond to the diverse and changing needs of our population.

What does "REEP" stand for?

Begun in 1975 as the Indo-Chinese Cooperative Education Program, we provided ESL, job counseling, and job development to adult Indo-Chinese refugees. Refugees soon came from other countries such as Afghanistan and Ethiopia, and in time, the organization became known as the Refugee Education & Employment Program, or "REEP".

REEP’s services expanded in the succeeding decades to meet the needs of immigrants from all over the world. In 1983, the program name changed to Arlington Education and Employment Program. Already widely known as "REEP," we kept the acronym.

Today, REEP serves adults from over 75 countries and provides 7,500 annual enrollments at seven locations throughout Arlington.
