Arlington Traditional School is a unique school. It has been a countywide elementary alternative school since 1978 and serves preschool through grade 5 students from all Arlington neighborhoods. Families follow specific application procedures and students are selected by lottery to be admitted into the school. Free bus transportation is provided for students living more than one mile from school. The school is noted for its consistent adherence to a traditional philosophy of education.

The successful teaching practices include:

  • Teacher-guided instruction in self-contained class rooms
  • Emphasis on basic education in the core academic areas
  • Regular homework assigned at all grade levels
  • Weekly summaries of each student's progress
  • Promotion based on grade level mastery
  • Behavior, dress, and grooming standards
  • Weekly assemblies

The school's ABC's of success-achievement, behavior and character are embedded in the school's established philosophy and program. Staff holds high expectations and encourages all students to achieve their full potential as students and citizens. A strong and collaborative partnership with parents and the community provides resources and support for the program and students. Together, the school celebrates children's high academic achievement and their accomplishments in the arts and sciences.
