{APS Logo}For Immediate Release: Oct. 27, 2009 Claremont Wins Governor's Nutrition and Physical Activity Award Governor Tim Kaine presented Claremont Elementary School with the Governor's Nutrition and Physical Activity Gold Award at a school ceremony on Oct. 21. Claremont is the first Arlington school to receive the award and one of eight schools across the state to receive the award. The program promotes health and wellness in Virginia's public schools by encouraging good nutrition and increased physical activity. Schools earn either a bronze, silver, or gold award for best practices that promote healthy lifestyles while combating childhood obesity, hypertension, and other preventable diseases. An interactive scorecard allows schools to measure their progress and receive recognition for their success in meeting the goals of the Governor's Healthy Virginians initiative. To be eligible for the award, schools must have accumulated 100 points, 50 points from the physical activity section and 50 points from the nutrition section. The Claremont staff worked with Food Services, the Health and Physical Education Office, the Claremont PTA and the Claremont Nutrition Advisory Council on meeting the goals of the program. |
