Colin Brown to be New McKinley Principa {New McKinley Elementary Principal Colin Brown} l

Colin Brown was appointed by the Arlington School Board to become the new principal of McKinley Elementary School. His appointment and new responsibilities at McKinley will begin on July 1. Currently in his 17th year with Arlington, Brown has been the assistant principal at Tuckahoe Elementary School since 2006

Superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy said of Brown, “Colin is highly regarded among his peers and has a varied background of experience at the elementary and secondary level. With that experience, I am confident he can help guide students through their academic career in APS and on to college. Colin is a strong collaborator, a dedicated educator and team builder.”

Education

Brown graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics and an advanced certificate in English instruction. He has a Master of Arts in international telecommunications from George Mason University and an education specialist (Ed. S.) in educational leadership from the University of Virginia. He also completed all course requirements in the UVA educational leadership doctoral program.

Career

Brown began his career as a middle school teacher in 1993 at Jefferson Middle School. He also taught at Kenmore Middle School and in the APS elementary, middle and high school-level summer programs. Brown was the acting assistant principal at Jefferson in 1997 and then served as assistant principal at Washington-Lee from 1999-2006 before joining Tuckahoe as assistant principal in the fall of 2006.

In addition, Brown has served on a number of committees including the APS Collaborative Problem Solving Committee, the Professional Development Elementary Advisory Group and the countywide Out of School Time Working Group.

Awards

Brown received the Milken Educator Award in 2001 and the Virginia Lottery Award for Teaching Excellence in 2002.

McKinley Elementary is a neighborhood school located on North McKinley Road in Arlington. Their collective goals encourage and empower all students in developing skills to think critically and creatively and become responsible citizens in our local, national and global society. Special programs and initiatives at McKinley include Spanish language instruction through the Foreign Language Elementary School (FLES) program; Children's Theater; the Peacemakers Program, an extensive offering of after-school enrichment; and the school's exemplary project – Kaleidoscope – that focuses on integrating the arts throughout the curriculum.
