Parent Academy: Fall 2010

The APS Parent Academy offers parents and guardians of children attending public or private schools in Arlington opportunities to obtain information on a wide variety of subjects. The Parent Academy also serves as a clearinghouse of resources and support offered within Arlington Public Schools. Courses include topics related to:

·         Child development

·         Student achievement

·         Educational programs

·         Internet safety

·         Social issues of importance to parents and families

·         Personal or family growth

·         Programs for second language speakers

·         Countywide events and information nights – including the Kindergarten, Middle and High School Information Nights, College Night, and the Summer Activities Fair

 

Parent Academy Partners

The APS Parent Academy is a partnership of APS and Arlington County organizations committed to supporting children and families.  The Academy regularly lists activities offered by:

·         APS Schools and PTAs

·         APS Special Education Parent Resource Center

·         Arlington County Department of Human Services

Courses are FREE.

Understanding Special Education

This one-session course is designed to support families and staff members in understanding special education services to meet the unique needs of students (2-21) with disabilities.  The course will include a brief overview of special education legislation and the steps in the “special education cycle” – from referral, evaluation, eligibility determination and service provision; and address how parents can be active participants throughout the cycle.  Participants will receive a free manual.  To register, please contact the Parent Resource Center (PRC) at 703.228.7239 or eparral@arlington.k12.va.us

 
Attention and Organizational Problems

Instructors’ Names:  Kelly Mountain and Wendy Carria.

This one-session course will include a description of the symptoms of various forms of attention disorders, a review of available resources within the schools, and suggestions of strategies for home.  Students with attention problems often experience difficulty (and frustration) with school work and home work.  This presentation will discuss how difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and disorganization affect work completion, study skills, organization, social interactions, and other aspects of our students’ lives.  Parents of both elementary and secondary students are welcome. An Innovative Approach to Parenting

Course will meet for five sessions on the following Wednesdays:

This course is based on the book by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D.  With 1-2-3 Magic you will learn how to get your kids to stop doing what you don't want them to do (arguing, whining, tantrums, sibling rivalry, etc.) and how to encourage your kids to start doing what you want them to do (cleaning rooms, going to bed, homework, etc.) “and more.
