Program Description
The APS Montessori Middle School program completes the program of Montessori studies for students progressing to the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
In what ways is the Montessori Middle School Program a continuation of the Montessori Elementary Program?
- Like primary and elementary Montessori teachers, Montessori middle school teachers consider the student as a whole person; academic, social, physical, and emotional needs are seen as inseparable.
- {math} The classroom atmosphere continues to encourage inquiry, creative problem solving, cooperation, and social interaction. Independent, interdisciplinary work provides for student choice and opportunities for in-depth exploration of students’ interests.
- Instruction takes place during a three hour uninterrupted work period to minimize interruptions to students’ concentration. Learning experiences continue to include a blend of small group lessons and guided independent work.
- Classes are multi-aged (11 to 14).
- Classrooms are equipped with the Advanced Montessori materials. Sixth graders continue the Upper Elementary Montessori Curriculum in math, science, social studies and history. The Virginia State Curriculum is woven into Montessori lessons and independent work.
- Authority is shared with students through class meetings where decisions are made democratically.

- Recognition of students’ accomplishments avoids competition. Montessori Middle school classrooms foster an attitude of cooperation rather than competition. It is common for students to ask other students for help. Individual responsibility is emphasized.
- Teachers are certified both by the Virginia Department of Education and the Association Montessori Internationale or American Montessori Society.
In what ways is the Montessori Middle School Program different from the Elementary Montessori Program?
- Students change classes for electives.
- There is an increased work load, and an emphasis on quality of work, responsibility, and time management.
- Student-run fundraisers help pay for extended field studies.
- The curriculum is organized around service learning, self-expression, and the development of theoretical knowledge arising from practical experiences. There is a particular emphasis on exploration of the history and culture of the local area.
- Teachers receive specialized Montessori training for middle school teaching.
