Congratulations

  • H-B Art Students to be honored at Carnegie Hall
     
    Five H-B Art Students will be honored for their work at a June 6th ceremony at Carnegie Hall, NY.   On the same day, two giant screens at 1515 Broadway, Times Square, will display a 30-second Scholastic Art & Writing Awards feature. It will run every 2 minutes throughout the entire day.  The awards ceremony will be broadcast that night live from Carnegie Hall at 6:00 p.m. EST.
     
    The winners and their works:
    Maura Shapiro, gold medalist for drawing for Future Of Fruit
    Santiago Mallan, silver medalist in drawing for The Minotaur Condemned
    Juliana Walker, silver medalist in mixed media for Badgers Amongst the Ruins
    Colman Goco, silver medalist in comic art for Extreme Frog Hunting
    Yiru Jiang, American Visions Award winner for her painting A Girl Standing In The Bathtub
     
    The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more.
     
    Two students, gold Medalist Maura Shapiro and American Visions Medalist, Yiru Jiang will have their art work on display in New York  at the Sheila C. Johnson design Center, Parsons The New School for Design.

  • Announcement of 2014 Award for Excellence in the Arts Winners

    The Fine Arts Department of H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program is proud to announce  that four HBW students will be recognized at this year’s Award for Excellence in the Arts ceremony sponsored by the Washington DC Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL

    This year’s recipients are:  Ella Tuson – Award of Excellence, Olivia Taylor – Music, Erin Lammie – Theater and Kristen Heaton – Visual Art.

    The eleventh annual Awards ceremony is supported by the Education Department of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  It is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Terrace Theater of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. 

     The Awards program recognizes the most promising junior-level talent from 37 different Washington DC area high schools.  This award documents these students' hard work and dedication and serves as a point of distinction for your future endeavors.

The current Snapshot features our super teacher Michelle Meehan who came to us this year after eight years at Kenmore.  This video features Michelle and other teachers in a special and unique summer 2013 program combining boat building and math skills.  In her mathematics classes Michelle is a master at incorporating real life applications with math discourse.

H-B Woodlawn's Energy Forum Featured on Green Scene

8th grade students spent 6 weeks studying energy use in the community. The students built model houses and tested different designs for energy efficiency. Working with Rebecca in English the 8th graders they published 7 articles for the Green Living Expo and the ACE (Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment) newsletter.
