Garvey Resigns from School Board to Assume Duties with County Board
Change Effective Immediately; School Board Announces Process to Fill Vacancy
Today, Arlington School Board member Libby Garvey formally resigned her position on the Arlington School Board, effective immediately, to assume her responsibilities as the newly-elected member of the Arlington County Board.
In her letter to the School Board, Garvey wrote, “I have been privileged to work directly with eleven different School Board members and to have hired, worked with and learned from two outstanding superintendents. Dr. Robert Smith established our school system as one that is data driven, committed to excellence for all students and has become nationally recognized for excellence. Dr. Patrick Murphy has continued Arlington's commitment to excellence and is focused on success for all of our students, with strong accountability systems and responsiveness to our students’ diverse learning needs.”
Commenting on Arlington’s academic focus during her tenure, Garvey said, “It is with real pride that I can say I was on the School Board when it first made closing the achievement gaps and raising student achievement its priorities – years before No Child Left Behind (NCLB) became law.” She continued, saying, “There is more work to do and APS continues to use data to understand students’ needs and to make the changes necessary to eliminate that gap.”
Garvey also noted the School Board’s efforts to address the growing capacity needs throughout the County, saying, “The current crowding issues we face are a direct result of the outstanding quality of our schools, and I am confident that the current School Board and staff are proceeding systematically to adopt optimal short- and long-term solutions to address that crowding.”
Thanking the APS staff, Garvey said, “I want to express my gratitude and deep respect for the teachers, principals, support staff and administrators who serve our children each and every school day, always committed to doing whatever it takes to help our students learn and often performing small miracles that improve the lives of our children and their families.”
School Board Chair Abby Raphael wished Ms. Garvey continued success as she assumes her new role on the County Board, saying, “On behalf of the entire School Board, I want to thank Libby for her dedicated service to Arlington Public Schools on the Board since 1997. We look forward to continuing to work with her as part of our ongoing collaboration with the County Board.” Raphael concluded, saying, “Arlington County is fortunate to have a new County Board member who knows Arlington so well and is dedicated to the continued success of our community.”
The Arlington School Board announced today a process to select a replacement to fill the remainder of Garvey’s term on the School Board through December 31, 2012. Details are available online.
