Congratulations goes out to these artists who have won 4 out of 7 awards in the 18th Annual Vince Kaspar Prizes for Excellence in the Arts! Sivia Campos (3rd Place and $100) for her photograph, "Pulsing through my Veins" - Mobin Fateh (Honorable Mention) for his photograph, "Beauty by the Sea" - McKaylee Reavis (Honorable Mention) for her photograph, "King George" - Amelia Semprebon (Honorable Mention) for her photograph, "Early Morning Fog"
 
CONGRATULATIONS to Amelia Semprebon and Frisly Sanchez who won in last week’s Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship business plan competition.  Both students will be advancing to the DC area finals next Friday in Washington DC competing for a spot in the national competition.  Good luck to these young entrepreneurs!

Congratulations to Chloe Laird, who's photo entitled, "Leap of Faith" won Honorable Mention in the 32nd Annual Congressional Arts Competition: "Hosted by Congressman James P. Moran, as part of the National Congressional Program, this exhibition recognizes the creative talents of Northern Virginia’s young artists.  One exhibiting youth will receive the honor of having their art work displayed in the U. S. Capitol for one year." 
 
Congratulations to Dan Brown who won Best Delegate for G20 at the AU Washington International Relations Conference - Model United Nations.
 
Congratulations to Alfonso Marino, Gabby Villegas, Rebecca Mercado-Rios, and Alex Hendel for qualifying for the state championship competition in economics. These four students completed an online test consisting of AP Economics questions that earned an average score high enough to qualify as one of only 14 teams across the state for the state championship. Alex, Rebecca, Gabby, and Alfonso will travel to VCU with Mr. Kelly on April 9th to participate in the finals of the Governor's Challenge in Economics.
 
Congratulations to Murphy Wilt who's photograph entitled, "Morning Dew" just won a Silver Medal in the 2014 Scholastic Art Awards competition at the National Level!  His winning photograph, along with all of our Gold and Silver Scholastic Regional winning art pieces, can be seen at the Arlington Central Library at 1015 Quincy Street until April 2nd.
 
CONGRATULATIONS to Dan Brown who has advanced to Finalist standing in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

CONGRATULATIONS to Melvi Quintanilla who received a gold medal at SKILLS USA competition last week in Automotive Maintenance. He is qualified to go down to Norfolk Va. to compete in the state competition.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jina DavidsonMargot Dunn and Wakefield Art students -  the Regional Scholastic Awards are in. 120 of 180 submitted photos and 34 out of 41 2D art submissions were awarded.   Our students won 49 individual Gold Keys, 28 Silver Keys, and 77 Honorable Mentions and 14 Portfolio Gold Keys, 2 Silver Keys and 2 Honorable Mentions. All 18 portfolios submitted received awards! Additionally, Sivia Campos won the American Visions Award for her photo entitled, "Respiratory".  The American Visions Award is regarded as the Best in Show and is awarded to 4 works of art each year.  This year marks the 2ND TIME Sivia Campos has won the American Visions Award for photography!  Regional Results | Portfolio Results
 
Congratulations Mobin Fateh - Winner 2014 Arlington Vehicle Decal Competition
Mobin won $2000 and the honor of his photo, entitled "Crystal Fountain" displayed on 185,000 vehicles registered to Arlington County this fall. In addition, Wakefield's other 2 finalists, Isabel George and Lena Mobin, each won $1000.  This marks the 4th time a Wakefield student has won the decal competition in the last 5 years. 
 
Congratulations to 9 photo students who have won the Arlington County Manager's photo contest. The county manager has selected 20 black and white photos of Arlington to adorn the County Manager's Suite and 9 of them are from our very own photographers: Amelia Semprebon – Memorial Key Bridge, Emily Hambridge – Carlin Hall, Isabel George – Arlington House, Marisa DeFranco – Bridge near Pentagon, McKaylee Reavis – Douglas Park, Mobin Fateh – Crystal City,Nahom Bereket – Columbia Pike, Reed Bonnefond – Arlington Planetarium,Sivia Campos – Pentagon City Ice Rink
 
Congratulations!The finalists for the Arlington Decal competitionhas been announced and once again, Wakefield students come out on top!We have 3 out of the 5 finalists spots and it is up to you to vote (Arlington residents, only) to make sure one of these fine young photographers get the grand prize: $2000 and their photo on 185,000 cars registered in Arlington county!

The finalists:
Isabel George- Her photo is entitled, "Arlington's Namesake" and depicts a lovely photo of Arlington house.
Mobin Fateh- His photo, "Crystal Fountain" shows off the diversity of Arlington in all of it's beautiful colors.
Lena Mobin- Her photo, "Arlington Landmark" takes a cool spin off of the sign at the Cinema and Drafthouse.
 
CONGRATULATIONS to Gene Pohl and ninth graders Tyler LaPointeand Ishan Chatterjee who were accepted into the 2014 Senior All District Honors Orchestra. Tyler came in 9th chair out of 113 who auditioned on violin. Ishan came in 6th chair out of 48 who auditioned on viola. They will perform in a concert at Marshall High School on January 11th.

CONGRATULATIONS to Nadim Nadir and the following students who were selected for this year's District XII Chorus Event in February: Benzon Candy, Leonard Claure, Anise Dorsey, Nathalie Gabutin, Forrest Jacobs, Anthony Lopez, Jose Penalva, Sean Romiti-Schulze, Will Westerly, Izzan Yussoff, Shannon Nelson, and Asa Meyer (alternate)

CONGRATULATIONS to Marlon Telleria, and students Alfonso Marino, Zach Chapman, Mauricio Rojas, Ezra Zike, and Carlos Bolanos who represented Wakefield at the ITEA First Academia Day Robotic Competition. The students came from our computer science program to solve a given problem. Wakefield was recognized as the most innovative team and came in as a finalist.

 
Wakefield Warrior Band traveled to Herndon, Va to compete in the US-Bands Invitational at Herndon HS. The Band just missed first place by 1.7  points and was awarded the caption title of  Best Music.  Way to Go Warriors. (Not bad for being without a field for 3.5 weeks).

CONGRATULATIONS to Beatriz Riggle who won first place and a $1000 scholarship in Telemundo's Hispanic Heritage Contest Reception for which Beatriz wrote an essay about how she maintains her Hispanic heritage and her involvement in art. She was interviewed in local Spanish-language news broadcasts and newspapers and has been offered an internship.
