On Wed, Jun 3, Randolph 5th graders had a surprise visit from Dork Diaries author, Rachel Renee Russell. The children found out that Dork Diaries is a family affair. The characters and plots are based on the childhood escapades of Ms. Russell’s 2 daughters, Erin and Nikki, who now work with her writing and illustrating the books. All 3 presented to the children, reading from their new book, talking about writing and illustrating, answering questions and leading the students through a series of activities associated with the people and situations in the books. The highlight of the assembly was when Nikki “dorkified” several of the students, by drawing portraits of them in the style of the characters in their books. Each classroom received a signed poster and each child received a bookmark, a sticker and an autographed copy of “Dork Diaries #9: Tales from a Not-So-Dorky-Drama Queen”. The visit was arranged and organized by librarian, Carolyn Fleming and supported by the Title I office.
