National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

  • One-hour overviews are offered twice each year to provide background information and a broad overview of the NB Certification process.
  • The National Board seminar provides teachers with a more in-depth understanding of the expectations and components of the assessment process to enable them to make an informed decision about pursuing National Certification.  Candidates who participate in this seminar get priority in funding when interest exceeds available funding.
  • APS supports around 30 candidates at 100% of the assessment fee. Candidates must  be full-time T-Scale employees.
  • Arlington Public Schools offers a support cohort facilitated by our NBCTs designed to support and guide candidates as they go through the process.
  • Funding application for teachers interested in starting the certification process in the 2016-17 school year. We were able to fund all applicants who sent in their application by May 13th.  At this point we have filled all spots for the 16-17 National Board cohort.  We may be able to pull teachers into the cohort off of a wait list.  Please send your completed application to Kerri Hirsch in the professional development office if you would like to be added to the list.
  • Teachers receive 90 recertification points for pursuing National Board Certification.
  • Teachers receive an additional 90 recertification points for achieving National Board Certification.
  • Full-time teachers who achieve National Board Certification will be entered into the Career Advancement Program (CAP).
  • The state of Virginia also offers an incentive to NBCTs.

For more information on the support and incentives in Arlington County Public Schools contact Kerri Hirsch, Teacher Evaluation Specialist.
