At last night’s meeting, the Arlington School Board voted to waive Policy 50-5 Transportation for the remainder of the 2012-13 school year to allow Campbell Elementary School students who were permitted to ride an APS bus last year to receive bus transportation for the 2012-13 school. The waiver was approved to avoid significant increases in operational costs and to limit increased crowding at Carlin Springs Elementary School.
In addition, the Board also directed the Superintendent to continue to evaluate bus utilization across APS and to determine if any bus service can be restored on a temporary basis for students who no longer receive bus service using existing transportation resources.
Boundary Policy and Proposed Framework
The Board discussed additional changes to and proposed revisions of School Board Policy 30-2.2 Boundaries and the proposed 2012-13 Boundary Framework 2012-13. Originally scheduled to be adopted at the meeting, the Board wanted to give community members additional time to review the proposed changes to the policy and the framework.
Changes to the policy include:
· Strengthening and expanding the wording on the community engagement process;
· Streamlining of the boundary criteria; and
· Clarifying that boundary change options must be evaluated against the criteria and shared publicly through the community engagement process.
Changes to the draft framework include:
· Extending the deadline to present boundary recommendations to the Board no later than the last meeting in March 2013; and
· Expanding, strengthening and provide more detail on the community engagement process.
The Board is expected to take action on the revised policy and boundary framework at the Nov. 1 meeting and encourages citizens to comment on the drafts. To comment on the framework or boundary policy, email email@example.com.
Staff proposed changes to the Middle and High School Program of Studies for the 2013-14 school year. Additions to the high school program of studies include computer hardware, networking and cyber security; advanced math, environmental science, and IB Arabic and Mongolian. Additional courses can be viewed online.
Staff presented two monitoring items including the annual Summer School report and an update on Goals 1 and 2 of the 2011-17 Strategic Plan.
The meeting began with a student-report on the Minority Student Achievement Network.
More information on the above items can be found on BoardDocs.
