School Board Lays Groundwork for Multimodal Transportation Committee

The Arlington School Board continued its discussion on the Multimodal Transportation and Student Safety Committee at last night’s meeting.

The proposed committee will report to the School Board and provide advice regarding the safe transportation of students to and from school by a variety of modes of transportation including walking, bus transportation, bicycling, and driving.

APS will begin accepting applications for the committee before Thanksgiving break. The applications will be posted on the APS website. The School Board is expected to approve the committee charge at the Dec. 6 meeting.

More information on the committee is available online.

The School Board also discussed the proposed legislative package for the 2013 session of the Virginia General Assembly. Funding and legislative issues include cost of competing; public school calendar; flexible state assessment program; vouchers and tax credits; and kinship care. The proposed legislative package is available online.

Monitoring Items
  • Evaluation of APS Programs for Students with Special Needs – Staff previewed the program evaluation for students with special needs and reviewed the new framework for reporting results of program evaluations.
  • Strategic Plan Update – The report highlighted the key performance indicators of Goals 1 and 2 of the Strategic Plan.

Recognitions

The meeting began with a report by School Bond Campaign Committee co-chairs Tecla Murphy and Jason Rylander. The 2012 school bond passed with over 80% of the vote, the highest percentage for any APS bond measure since the school division began issuing bonds in 1988. The Board thanked Murphy and Rylander for their work.

The board also honored 13 students who were recognized by the Virginia Music Educators Association for their achievements in jazz, choir and orchestra.

More information on the above items can be found on BoardDocs.

Citizens who want to comment on any of the items discussed at the Nov. 13 School Board meeting should contact the Board at school.board@apsva.us or call 703-228-6015.
