APS Earns Platinum Certification and First Place in Green Schools Challenge
Arlington Public Schools earned a Platinum Certification as a Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) Certified Green Schools Division. APS also received first place in the category of school divisions serving more than 10,000 students in the 2012 VSBA Green Schools Challenge.
The VSBA Green Schools Challenge is a friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local school division and the broader community. Out of over 130 school divisions in Virginia, 37 entries and 32 school divisions were recognized as certified green school divisions.

School divisions accumulate points in one of 12 categories including, policy adoption; energy efficiency; green buildings; waste management; vehicles; indoor environmental quality; employee incentives; education and community participation; schools; student involvement; cooperation between school divisions; and local government and innovation. To earn Platinum Certification, the highest level, a school division had to accumulate 200 points.

The competition was sponsored by Moseley Architects, Trane, and ABM Building & Energy Solutions.

Winners were announced at the Opening General Session of the VSBA Annual Convention on Nov. 14 in Williamsburg.
