Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Appointed
The Arlington School Board appointed Connie Skelton as the new Assistant Superintendent of Instruction at last night’s meeting. Skelton has been serving as the interim assistant superintendent since November.
“Ms. Skelton continues to provide the continuity and leadership needed in the Department of Instruction and works effectively with all APS stakeholders, including advisory and community groups, said Superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy. He added, “She moved into the Assistant Superintendent position during a time when the department was preparing for and then moved to its new location at Sequoia. Ms. Skelton maintained a calm and reassuring demeanor as the department moved through the process.”
Skelton has been with APS for 22 years. She began her career with APS as a science teacher at Williamsburg Middle School. She has also served as a science specialist and as APS science supervisor for six years.
Since August, Skelton has led staff through the English Language Learner Program Evaluation; worked with staff in developing the 2012-13 Professional Learning Day activities; worked collaboratively with the Executive Leadership Cohorts with the University of Virginia; and is presently working with the assistant superintendents of Student Services and Administrative Services to develop a long range systemwide Professional Learning Plan.
Her appointment is effective immediately.
