Proposed 2013-14 School Year Calendar Presented to Board
At last night’s meeting, staff presented the Arlington School Board with the proposed 2013-14 school year calendar.
Under the proposed calendar, school would begin on Tue, Sept. 3. For students attending Barcroft Elementary School which operates on a modified school year calendar, classes would begin Thu, Aug. 1.
Other important dates in the proposed calendar include:
Nov. 27-29 – Thanksgiving Break
Dec. 23-Jan. 1 – Winter Break
April 14-18 – Spring Break
Last day for high school – June 18
Last day for middle school/High School Graduation – June 19
Last day for elementary school – June 20
All of the draft 2013-14 calendars (Barcorft, Summer School, Arlington Mill/Langston, Stratford and H-B Woodlawn), additional information and the guidelines used to develop the calendars are available online. The Board is scheduled to adopt the 2013-14 calendars at the March 21 meeting.
- Annual Food Services Report – Staff highlighted Food Services operations, noting that Arlington school cafeterias serve 12,000 customers daily and prepared approximately 1.72 million lunches and over 432,000 breakfasts last year. Food Services operates as a self-supporting $6.5 million business and has upgraded to a new Point of Service technology system and increased the availability of local products in the school lunch program by purchasing 86% of food locally.
- Annual K-12 Social Studies Update – The report provided an overview of the K-12 social studies program including instructional planning and delivery; assessment and data driven practices and professional learning. Staff reported on current SOL test results and pass rates as well as enrollment in AP courses.
- Advisory Council on Instruction (ACI) Advisory Committee Status Report - The Pupil Services Advisory Committee (PSAC) co-chairs reported on current activities and reviewed the services offered by school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and substance abuse counselors.
- ACI Status Report – Staff updated the on the status of ACI recommendations from the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years and noted that 20 recommendations have been completed; 17 are ongoing or in progress and 5 are on hold for funding or pending further study.
The meeting began with a student showcase highlighting Arts in the Schools Month. The Board also recognized the winner and finalists of this year’s Arlington County decal competition.
