Lifeguard Training

The Arlington Public Schools Lifeguarding program offers training in the nationally recognized American Red Cross Lifeguard Program. The course prepares individuals 15 years and older to become professional lifeguards by introducing them to concepts and skills necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies in a swimming pool. Class participants must be 15 years or older before the last class date. The skills taught include water rescue, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid. Successful participants will receive American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid. Because this is a skills based training class, participants must attend all class sessions. There can be no exceptions.

Participants must attend and successfully complete a Pre-Course Session consisting of the following skills:
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound brick.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near  the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Course Fee:  $325 (Your credit card will be charged a non-refundable registration fee of $50 within 2 business days of your registration. The remaining balance will be charged after the class begins.)
Successful candidates will be eligible for full- and part-time employment as a Lifeguard with Arlington Public Schools. Hourly pay rates range from $8.70 to $13.20 depending on previous work experience.

Income-based fee reductions are available for qualifying Arlington Residents. Contact the Aquatics Management Office at 703-228-6263 for more information.

 Lifeguard Review Class
The American Red Cross has updated their lifeguard training program effective February 2012. As a result, we are currently not offering lifeguard review classes. If you need to renew your certifications, you will need to complete one of the lifeguard training sessions listed above.

Arlington Junior Lifeguarding Program

The Arlington Junior Lifeguarding program offers training based on the nationally recognized American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding Program. The Arlington program provides training to individuals 13-14 years old who are interested in becoming Lifeguards when they turn 15.  The training focuses on five core areas - Prevention, Fitness, Response, Leadership, and Professionalism.  Participants will develop an understanding of basic emergency response techniques and receive certification in CPR/AED and Standard First Aid.  The program will also provide opportunities to improve personal fitness and to develop skills and attitudes that are important for future lifeguards, including customer service, front desk management, communication and problem solving skills.  Because this is a skills based training class, participants must attend all classes and the minimum amount of internship sessions. There can be no exceptions.

Participants must attend and successfully complete a Pre-Course Session consisting of the following skills:

  • Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
  • Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
  • Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
    ■ Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl.
    ■ Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.
Course Fee:  $250 (Non-refundable registration fee: $25)

Participants who complete the Junior Lifeguarding program, including the internship, may be selected as candidates for paid Lifeguarding positions with Arlington Public Schools once they turn 15 and are eligible for Lifeguarding certification.  Income-based fee reductions are available for qualifying Arlington Residents.

We do not have any WSI classes scheduled at this time. If you would like to be added to our waiting list, please send an email to liset.reaves@apsva.us. Please note: Course must have a minimum of 8 participants to run.
