On Dec. 19, the Arlington School Board approved the FY 2015 Budget Framework and Direction. The framework directs the Superintendent to prepare a budget that reflects current economic conditions, while honoring the vision and legacy of APS and Arlington County in providing a high quality education for each student.
The Board also approved the legislative package for the 2014 session of the Virginia General Assembly. School Board priorities for the upcoming session include allowing immigrant students working toward legal residency in the U.S. to pay in-state-tuition rates at the commonwealth’s public institutions of higher education as well as giving local school districts more autonomy over setting their own calendar. The full list of legislative priorities is available online.
Finally, the Board adopted a revised School Board Policy 40-1.14 Gifts to Employees. The revised policy, which goes in effect July 1, 2014, limits gifts to $100 per family per year limit on gifts. The revised policy also will define what is not considered to be a gift.
Under Monitoring Items, staff presented the last of four progress reports on the Strategic Plan. The report took a closer look at Goal 5 – The Whole Child, and included highlights and results of key performance indicators. The full report is available online.
Staff also provided an update on the 2015-24 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Framework. The report summarized the 2014 capacity development plan/capital improvement plan; the criteria for prioritized decision making and community engagement. Two CIP meetings are scheduled for Jan. 6 and 7. The full report is available online.
At the beginning of the meeting, the School Board recognized staff and students on their recent accomplishments. The recognitions included:
· The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Green Schools Platinum Award;
