Parent Academy: Winter 2012

The APS Parent Academy offers parents and guardians of children attending public or private schools in Arlington opportunities to obtain information on a wide variety of subjects. The Parent Academy also serves as a clearinghouse of resources and support offered within Arlington Public Schools. Courses include topics related to:
  • Child development
  • Student achievement
  • Educational programs
  • Internet safety
  • Personal or family growth
  • Programs for second language speakers
  • Social issues of importance to parents and families
  • Countywide events and information nights, including Kindergarten, Middle and High School Information Nights, College Night, and the Summer Activities Fair

Exercise: The Fountain of Youth
 
Eat, Live and Be Well is an educational lecture series designed by public health nurses to teach the basics of nutrition and healthy living. We will explore why family meal time is so important and how to make healthy choices on a budget, whether you’re eating fast food or a home cooked meal. We’ll also examine the importance of exercise and reveal the truth about processed foods and high fructose corn syrup.

Stressed-Out Teens
Managing Homework, AP Classes, SAT Prep, Friends, and Everything Else!

Thu, Jan. 19, 7-8:30 p.m.
In this workshop, parents will learn how to help their teen:
  • Find a balance between academics, sports, activities, etc.
  • Encourage effective study skills
  • Maintain organization with practical strategies
  • Foster time management to decrease procrastination
  • Navigate the social and emotional maze during the teen years
Presenters: Ann Dolin, M.Ed. and Toni Cortellessa, LCSW
Ann is the author of “Homework Made Simple: Tips, Tools, and Solutions for Stress-Free Homework.”
Toni is an individual and family therapist with adolescents and adults and is a member of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis.

Preschool to Kindergarten Transition for Students with Disabilities
Fri, Jan. 20, 2012:  10 to 11:30 a.m.
Families are invited to join us to discuss the transition of preschool students with disabilities to kindergarten.  This session will provide an overview of the transition process, and the important role families play as children with disabilities transition from preschool to elementary school. Registration is requested. ADHD Parent Support Network

The Arlington AD/HD Parent Support Network meets regularly and provides families an opportunity to receive information on each meeting’s designated topic, as well as opportunities to participate in discussions with other parents, staff and guest speakers. Our first 2011-12 ADHD Parent Support Network meeting will address the topic of acquainting your child’s new teachers with your family and talking with teachers about your child’s AD/HD. Plan to bring suggestions and strategies that you’ve successfully used in the past, and questions you may have for the group.

Supporting Your Child's Emotional Well-Being: A Community Approach
Thu, Jan. 26, 2012, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
 
Parents, staff and community members are invited to join us for an important session on fostering emotional well-being in children. Participants will learn about child and adolescent depression, behaviors that warrant attention, treatment options, supports that are available in school, and strategies to support emotional well-being in youth.
 
Panelists will include school psychologists, counseling staff, community members and a representative from Arlington's Department of Human Services. Simultaneous Spanish-Language interpretation will be provided.

Practical Parenting: STEP for parents of children ages 6-12
Thursdays, Jan. 26-March 1: 7-8:30 p.m.
A six-week course based on the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) curriculum for parents of children ages 6-12. Topics include: Understanding Yourself and Your Child, Understanding Beliefs and Feelings, Encouraging Your Child and Yourself, Listening and Talking to Your Child, Helping Children Cooperate, and Discipline that Makes Sense. Kindergarten Information Night
Mon, Jan. 30, 2012, 7-9 p.m.
The evening will begin with a general APS overview in the auditorium, where parents/guardians will receive information about the kindergarten curriculum, the student registration process, school options, extended day and other school-related services; including helpful tips on how parents/guardians can prepare their children for their kindergarten experience. After the general session, representatives from each of our APS 22 elementary schools will be on hand to meet parents and provide additional information about their schools. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation service will be available for the general opening session in the auditorium. Arlington Family Network Presents: Future Planning for Families with Special Needs Students

A Presentation by Christopher Waddell:
What financial issues and plans should a parent or guardian of a child with special needs consider?
What tax-saving strategies are there for families with medical issues, and what can I deduct this year?
What are the legal and financial issues I need to consider as my child transitions out of high school?
A question and answer period will follow.
Christopher Waddell is an Arlington parent and co-founder of the Arlington County Special Needs PTA (SEPTA). He is a certified financial planner, business owner, and father of three (two special needs children).

Montessori Information Night
Wed, Feb. 8, 2012, 7—8:30 p.m.General overview of pre-k and elementary Montessori programs, including the application process. Visit Montessori classrooms and speak with Montessori staff. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available for the general session.

Summer Activities Fair
Fri, Feb. 10, 2012, 6—8 p.m.
Visit with over 100 representatives offering summer opportunities for children ages 3-17. Explore a variety of summer camps and programs, including academic and art programs, sports camps, day and overnight camps, and camps offering accommodations for children with special needs.
Visit www.apsva.us/summerfair after Feb. 1 for a list of participating exhibitors.

Teens interested in summer employment or volunteer opportunities can obtain a list of
exhibitors offering these opportunities at the information booth during the fair.
