Abingdon Uses Architecture to Help Teach Core Subjects

In this week’s episode, #digitalAPS showcases an Abingdon fifth-grade class pioneering the use of computer-aided design to integrate history, math, art, and technology.

Students are learning and applying knowledge regarding the history, architecture, and measurement of medieval history by constructing realistic scale architectural models of Gothic Cathedrals in Google SketchUp. This intuitive and versatile program is used by professional architects to create blueprints and conceptual models.

Abingdon’s Architecture program uses the real-world focus of architecture to apply SOL concepts in an authentic and meaningful context, simultaneously extending knowledge, and reinforcing SOL objectives. Students are making interdisciplinary connections, employ higher-order thinking skills to create culminating projects to demonstrate and instruct knowledge.
