Recognition of Outgoing School Member Abby Raphael
Following a performance by the Washington–Lee High School Madrigals after the opening ceremonies, the School Board, Superintendent, and Executive Leadership Team joined members of the community to honor and thank School Board member Abby Raphael. Raphael has served on the School Board since January 2008. State Senator Adam Ebbin and Del. Rip Sullivan read Senate Joint Resolution No. 367
that commended her on her service to the students of Arlington Public Schools. Her term ends on December 31.ACTION ITEMS:
The Arlington School Board adopted its FY 2017 budget direction to the Superintendent. The County will increase its minimum transfer to APS by $8.2 million, but rising enrollment will once again drive expenditures higher, by an estimated $10.9 million.
The Board expressed support for a balanced budget that prioritizes Strategic Plan goals, includes a compensation increase for eligible staff and start-up funding to launch the Arlington Tech Academy at the Career Center. More details are available online
.Summer School Fees
Summer School registration fees for 2016 will remain the same for all programs except Career Center Enrichment. Tuition will also remain the same as 2015 for elementary enrichment; high school new work for credit, Career Center enrichment and the Outdoor Lab. Tuition fees will change for Driver’s Education and there will be new tuition fees for middle school enrichment courses. More information is available online
. MONITORING ITEM:
Strategic Plan Monitoring Report #1 – Staff provided the Board with the first monitoring report on the Strategic Plan. The report highlighted the progress being made towards achieving Goals 1 and 2: Challenge and Engage all Students and Eliminating Gaps. Staff also noted reading and math SOL scores, the number of advanced diplomas and next steps. Staff also provided a schedule for updates on Goals 3, 4 and 5. The full report is available online
. OTHER RECOGNITIONS
Staff representatives also reported on the launch of this year’s annual United Way campaign, and the School Board was acknowledged by the United Way for the Board’s ongoing commitment to the organization.
Finally, the School Board was recognized by the Arlington Gay & Lesbian Alliance and received their Equality Award for adding gender identity to the nondiscrimination code for students and employees.
