School Board Advisory Councils

Arlington Public Schools has a strong network of volunteer advisory councils, each one focusing on a specific subject or topic area.

The School Board Advisory Council Working group has redesigned its advisory councils for the 2026-27 school year and beyond.
(For information on previous advisory committees, please see the  bottom of this page.)

The School Board is committed to building advisory councils that reflect the diversity of the APS community. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and experiences, including individuals connected to English learner programs, special education, advanced academics, Title I communities, budgeting, and community advocacy.

Serving on an Advisory Committee

Advisory committees and advisory groups vary in formality and time commitment. Some report to the School Board on an annual basis, while others work directly with Arlington Public Schools staff members on a particular project or subject. In addition, ad hoc groups may be formed for limited terms to focus on projects and issues of immediate concern. Terms are staggered so that vacancies occur regularly.

Most members of advisory groups are appointed by the School Board, which seeks to reflect the broad diversity of the community in order to ensure a wide range of perspectives. In addition, some committees or groups are convened by the Superintendent on other topics.

If you are interested in finding out more about a particular advisory group or committee, attend a committee meeting. All meetings are open to the public, and all citizens are welcome to attend regardless of whether they have children enrolled in Arlington Public Schools.

Superintendent-Appointed and Other Committees

In addition to the School Board Advisory Committees, the APS Superintendent maintains advisory committees for various topics. For information or to volunteer to serve on any of these committees, call the Superintendent’s Office at 703-228-2497.

Superintendent’s Advisory Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Student Concerns

The Superintendent’s Advisory Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Student Concerns (SACIRSC) consists of parents, community leaders, and staff who raise concerns voiced by immigrant and refugee students and parents; leverage the Committee’s knowledge, networks, and resources to identify solutions and advocate for timely implementation; and support the APS vision “to be an inclusive community that empowers all students to foster their dreams, explore their possibilities, and create their futures.”

For more information or to volunteer to serve on this Committee, contact Brian Stockton, Committee liaison, at [email protected].
