School Board Open Office Hours

Open Office Hours is a forum for Board members to listen to comments and concerns and to discuss various topics with community members. Each Board member will share what they heard during Open Office Hours with the entire Board and the Superintendent.

Community members are welcome to meet with a Board member during Virtual Open Office Hours. The School Board generally holds Open Office Hours on Mondays when school is in session unless otherwise noted. Open Office Hours are not held during Winter or Spring Break or over the summer.

The sign-up link for the April 16, Open Office Hours is now closed.

The sign-up link for April 29, Open Office Hours will be available on Friday, April 26, after 1 p.m. The sign-up link will be available until 3 p.m. on the day of Open Office Hours. 

School Board members Mary Kadera and Bethany Zecher Sutton will host in-person Open Office Hours on Tuesday, April 16, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Pike Library, 816 S. Walter Reed Dr., Arlington, VA. Board Members will manage the April 16 Open Office Hours slightly differently. Please carefully review the following information to ensure you sign up accordingly.

Schedule

  • 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: One board member will host open forum meetings to listen to comments and concerns on the topics listed below. These sessions aim to facilitate inclusive conversations where everyone is welcome to attend and participate.
    • 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Budget
    • 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. School Climate
    • 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. Academics
    • 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. Open Conversation
  • 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: One board member will meet individually with participants seeking a one-on-one conversation. To schedule an individual meeting, participants must sign up ahead of time using the SignUp Genius link that will be available from April 12 through April 16 to select a 10-minute time slot. Availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

During Open Office Hours

  • Participants are expected to be courteous and respectful. If a participant is disruptive, it may be necessary for the Board members to end the meeting early.
  • Personnel matters are confidential. Visitors are asked to respect that confidentiality; the School Board members cannot comment or offer their individual opinions on such matters. This silence should not be treated as an indication of any particular position on the matter.
  • Statements that personally attack individuals or do not relate to Arlington Public Schools’ business are not appropriate for discussion. You will be asked to limit your remarks to issues related to Arlington Public Schools’ business.
  • Participants are welcome to share their comments in writing by sending them to school.board@apsva.us. A copy of the remarks will be distributed to all Board members.
  • Schedule is subject to change to accommodate participants or circumstances.

For Virtual Open Office Hours:

  • To participate in virtual Open Office Hours individuals must sign-up ahead of time using the SignUpGenius link posted the Friday before Open Office Hours and select a time slot for an individual meeting. (Date and/or time are subject to change).
  • Participants will have 5 minutes to address the Board member
  • At the end of the 5 minutes, the individual meeting will end so that the Board member can move on to the next participant.
  • Participants are expected to be courteous, respectful, and mindful of the 5-minute time frame.  If a participant is disruptive, it may be necessary for the Board member to end the meeting early.
