 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

1 full year  Beginning Band (19232) Students will demonstrateproper care and holding position for a musical instrument/  Demonstrate correct playing technique toproduce a characteristic sound/Understand the basics of reading music andcorresponding musical interpretation for accurate performance of pitch, rhythm,time signature, key signature, tempo, and expressive markings / Develop theskill to play a range of one octave or beginning rudiments (percussion) and usethese skills as a member of the ensemble /Develop the ability to tune theinstrument using a tuner / Create simple rhythmic or melodic improvisations, 1to 2 measures in length /Play ensemble music with a steady beat using ametronome and in response to conducting gestures / Demonstrate learning throughappropriate performances and presentations

1 full year  Beginning Orchestra  (19237) Students will demonstrate proper careand holding position for a musical instrument and bow / Demonstrate correctplaying technique to produce a characteristic sound, including pizzicato andbasic bowing techniques / Understand the basics of reading music and theircorresponding musical interpretation for accurate performance of pitch, rhythm,time signature, key signature, tempo, and expressive markings / Develop theskill to play a range of one octave (first position) and double stops on openstrings and use these skills as a member of the ensemble /Develop the abilityto tune the instrument using a tuner / Create simple rhythmic or melodicimprovisations, 1 to 2 measures in length / Play with a steady beat using ametronome and in response to conducting gestures 18/ Demonstrate learningthrough appropriate performances and presentations

Full year  Beginning Chorus  (19261) Students will demonstrate properposture, breath control, and mouth shape for good tone / Understand the basicsof reading music and corresponding musical interpretation for accurateperformance of pitch, rhythm, time signature, key signature, tempo andexpressive markings / Develop the ability to match pitch accurately using adiatonic pitch system and maintain a part within the ensemble /Create simplerhythmic or melodic improvisations, 1 to 2 measures in length /Respond toconducting gestures / Demonstrate learning through appropriate performances andpresentations

ExploratoryRotation/Wheel (19000) Students take approximately 5 weeks of each coursein a rotation and will include some of the following elective courses: Chorus,Art, Keyboarding, Tech ED, Family Consumer Science, Theater Arts, Journalismand World Language
