Virginia State Law

The Commonwealth of Virginia Attendance Code requires that all children between the ages of five and eighteen be enrolled in school and attend school daily. During the school year students who fail to report to school for a total of five scheduled school days without an excuse are referred to the school attendance specialist /social worker for further action. The attendance specialist or school social worker will interview the student, parent, and other relevant parties to develop a plan to resolve the attendance issue. A student who is absent from school for fifteen (15) consecutive days will be automatically withdrawn from school and will be required to register again upon returning to school. As Virginia requires school attendance for children age 5 and older, school staff will continue to support the family with returning the child to school.
