The following is a list of resources that provide families with additional information to support them with improving diversity, equity and inclusion. While these resources have been reviewed by the APS Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, APS does not endorse or support any of the organizations that developed the resources below.

National Museum of African American History & Culture: Talking with Children about Race and Racism
Our goal is to help children understand what race is, how it operates in society, and why race in America is important. We hope the ideas and resources help guide the conversations with your children as they discover how race plays a part in all of our lives.

As U.S. racial divisions and inequities grow sharper and more painful, the work of envisioning and creating systems of authentic racial inclusion and belonging in the United States remains work in progress. We believe that reversing the trend must begin in our homes, schools, and communities with our children’s hearts and minds.

Race and Ethnicity:Views from Inside the Unconscious Mind
As a university-wide, interdisciplinary research institute, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity works to deepen understanding of the causes of—and solutions to—racial and ethnic disparities worldwide, and to bring about a society that is fair and just for all people.

2020 Commission Report Inequity and Inequality in Virginia Law
Published in November 2020, this report summarizes the findings of a commission tasked with identifying Virginia laws that “have the effect or could have the effect of enabling or promoting racial inequity or inequality.” The  Commission’s findings and recommendations were distributed to promote best practices in reducing racial inequity in the Commonwealth.

A new statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics looks at the effects of racism on children’s development, starting in the womb.

“The family had been talking about Black History Month over dinner on a recent February weeknight, and Kirstin Cassell, a clinical social worker in Greensboro, N.C., had asked her children what their classrooms were doing to celebrate. But it wasn’t until later, after the plates were cleared away and the younger children had wandered off, that Cassell’s 12-year-old son admitted he was bothered by something at school.”

APS Teaches Difficult History and Current events
Teaching difficult history and current events can be a challenge for all social studies educators.  Issues from both the present and the past can bring up many feelings for both students and teachers.  Addressing issues at the classroom level allows teachers to use knowledge of their students to prepare them to engage in lifelong inquiry and informed civic action.
