Fees and Payments
How are fees charged?
For the school year, fees are charged monthly with payment due by the first of the month. For the summer programs there is a one-time fee charged for the entire summer.
How are my fees determined?
Fees are determined by the household income of the family (sliding scale), the bell schedule of the school the child(ren) attend, and the enrollment options selected (before and/or after school).
What are the different payment methods?
Payments can be made by credit card (Visa or MasterCard, and Discover), check, or money order. Online payments can be made through mySchoolBucks. Check and money order payments can be mailed to 2110 Washington Blvd. Arlington, VA 22204. Credit card (Visa or MasterCard, and Discover), check and money order payments can be made in person at the Extended Day Central Office.
Can I pay over the phone?
How can I get a receipt of my payment?
What is the Extended Day tax ID number?
The Employer Identification Number (EIN) for the Extended Day program is 54-6001128.
Why a lottery?
Lotteries will only be held for schools where registrations exceed capacity to ensure a fair process that gives all families an equal opportunity for enrollment.
Which schools will have a lottery for Extended Day?
Not all schools will have a lottery. Lotteries will only be held for schools for which the registrations exceed the capacity. In recent years, there have been waitlists for the afternoon programs at Abingdon, Ashlawn, Claremont, Henry, Key, McKinley, Science Focus, and Tuckahoe. There will not be waitlists for any summer programs or morning programs during the school year. Extended Day continues ongoing efforts to accommodate all children from the waitlists. We monitor registration and work throughout the entire school year to enroll as many children as possible.
How many slots are available at each school?
Extended Day works with administrators to determine program capacity at each school. The number of slots at each school is posted on the Extended Day website prior to the lottery.
When is the lottery?
The lottery for the schools that have more registrants than spaces available will take place after option schools have notified families of their status. The lottery date and location will be announced each year and be open to the public.
How can I make sure my child is in the lottery?
All families who register their child during the announced registration period will have their name entered in the lottery, if a lottery is necessary at their child’s school. Please note: For current APS Extended Day families to be included in the lottery, their Extended Day payments for the current school year must be up to date.
What is the policy for siblings?
If the siblings attend the same school, the family will have one entry in that school’s lottery. If the family number is selected for enrollment all the children in the family will get in. If the family’s number is selected after the program has reached capacity, all the children will be placed on the waitlist. Families registering children for different schools will have lottery numbers at each school.
When will parents know if their child has been enrolled or placed on a waitlist?
All parents will be notified no later than June 1.
What can I do if I find out in late May that my child is placed on an Extended Day wait list?
You do not have to wait to develop contingency plans. Families can register for other local child care programs to ensure child care coverage. If their children are selected in the Extended Day lottery, and no longer need the alternative program, they can withdraw their child from the other program. If children who attend other local programs are accepted into Extended Day in the middle of a month for which you have already paid, Extended Day will hold your spot until the following month, upon request.
Will Summer Extended Day have a lottery?
No. There will not be a lottery for summer school Extended Day as there is sufficient space for all children at the summer school programs.
When does Extended Day registration begin?
Registration for new and returning families begins annually in the Spring and continues throughout the school year. The specific date that registration begins will be announced each year on our registration page.
Why did the registration process change for the 2019-2020 School Year?
After some of the technical challenges experienced during previous registration periods, Extended Day solicited feedback from families on the process. The new process responds to the parent input, creating equitable access to all registrants regardless of timing and access to computers, and it addresses the concerns related to the first-come, first-served approach.
Why an extended registration “window?”
In recent years, Extended Day has opened registration at different times, including midnight, 8 am, and Saturday morning. Subsequently, each year we heard from parents that the time was inconvenient and many did not have online access at that particular time. Thus, the first-come, first-served nature of registration created a disadvantage for many families. The prolonged registration period eliminates the urgency to register immediately and provides equal access for everyone, regardless of work schedules, computer access and other mitigating factors.
How is the registration period determined?
Parents will be notified of their child’s status for the option schools on May 1st. Extended Day is waiting for that process to be complete to allow those families to register their children in the appropriate school. If Extended Day closed registration before the option school lotteries were complete, families might register for Extended Day for schools their children would not ultimately attend. Having children registered inaccurately would create challenges for Extended Day in projecting enrollment, hiring staff, establishing and managing wait lists, requesting space and other issues.
Is there a registration fee?
Yes. The annual registration fee is $40 for the first child and $30 for each additional child. The fee is charged once each year between July 1 and June 30.
Is my child guaranteed a spot in Extended Day?
At most schools each child will be enrolled, however there are waitlists each year at some schools. For schools where the number of registration exceeds the number of slots there will be a lottery.
Why are there waitlists at some Extended Day programs?
Waitlists occasionally occur due to staff and/or space needs. If additional staff is needed, we hire additional staff. If more space is needed, we work with school administrators to identify additional space for use by Extended Day.
If a school, for example, can accommodate 700 children during the school day, why is the Extended Day enrollment limited to around 200 after school?
State licensing standards require specific square footage per child, depending on the type of activity conducted in each space. And, the kinds of activities offered in Extended Day are very different than those during the school day. While perhaps 24 children can comfortably be accommodated in an instructional classroom, the same space may not necessarily accommodate the same number of children participating in art, drama, dance, or active games, because of the nature of these activities.
How many slots are available at each school?
Extended Day works with administrators to determine program capacity at each school. The capacity may increase as more space becomes available, allowing Extended Day to enroll more children.
Do I need to register my child every year for Extended Day?

What happens if I enroll my child in my neighborhood school and then find out she has been pulled off the waitlist to an elementary option program?
If you have registered for the Extended Day program during the initial registration window and are subsequently informed that your child was enrolled at an option school, Extended Day will transfer your registration to the option school.
What happens if I submit my child’s Extended Day registration after the initial registration period?
If your child’s school has not reached capacity, your child will be enrolled. If your child’s school has a waitlist, your child will be placed at the end of the waitlist.
