APS Announces Octavia Knigge as Next Principal of Dorothy Hamm Middle School

Octavia KniggeAPS has named Ms. Octavia Knigge as the next principal of Dorothy Hamm Middle School, following approval by the Arlington School Board. She will begin her role on July 1, 2026, following the retirement of current principal Ellen Smith.

Ms. Knigge brings more than 20 years of experience in public education, including over a decade in school-based administration. She currently serves as assistant principal at Kenmore Middle School in APS. Her experience includes strengthening instructional practices, supporting data-informed decision-making and building collaborative teams that contribute to student growth, including for English learner and special education populations. She also brings experience in school operations, including testing coordination, staff supervision and supporting school improvement efforts.

Ms. Knigge holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Regent University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Virginia State University. She was named the 2025 APS Assistant Principal of the Year.
