Maria Smith – Abingdon Elementary School
Mrs. Smith goes above and beyond to support her students in and out of the classroom. As a former parent volunteer in her class, I have observed how hard-working and dedicated she is in the classroom. She knows each of her students’ strengths and likes, and she makes a real effort to bond with them. My son had Mrs. Smith as a first-grade teacher two years ago, but he still frequently stops into her class before school to say hi and to talk to her. He recently invited her to the flag football playoffs that he and other of her former students were in, and she was kind enough to take time out of her weekend to come and support the kids at two of their games. Additionally, Mrs. Smith frequently volunteers her time to support the Abingdon community outside of school hours. She has decorated her car for the PTA’s annual Trunk-or-Treat, she volunteers at holiday food/clothes distributions for school families, and she has attended PTA meetings. We are so lucky to have Mrs. Smith as part of the Abingdon community!
Maria Romero – Gunston Middle School

As a Bilingual Family Specialist, she goes above and beyond to ensure that every family feels welcomed, supported, and empowered. Her work with the PTA, Padres Latinos & Latinas Leading Tomorrow creates vital spaces for parents and students to connect, learn, and grow. Maria’s role as a Point of Contact for Military Families is equally impactful. She understands these families’ unique challenges and works tirelessly to provide them with resources, support, and a sense of belonging.Maria is a bridge between cultures and a true advocate for equity and inclusion. She listens intently, responds with empathy, and fosters meaningful connections that strengthen our school community. Her contagious passion inspires others to engage, collaborate, and uplift one another. Maria’s commitment to serving others is unwavering, whether organizing events, leading workshops, or providing one-on-one support.Maria’s impact extends beyond her job description. She is a leader, a connector, and a champion for every family she serves. Her dedication is an inspiration, and she embodies what being an APS All-Star means.
