Life on Earth depends on oxygen, and plants (trees, grasses, bushes, and even algae and phytoplankton in the oceans) produce most of the oxygen we breathe. But how can we observe this happening?
Activity:
Place a green leaf in a clear glass of water and leave it in a sunny location. Ask your student to predict what will happen. After about an hour, observe the tiny bubbles forming on the leaf and discuss why they appear.
(Answer: Plants use sunlight as food (a process called photosynthesis), and when they do, they create oxygen, which escapes through tiny holes on the leaves and appears as bubbles when the leaf is under water.)
