Parent Resource Center Monday Message: 3.6.23

March 6, 2023

This week, we join APS in celebrating School Social Work Week. In APS, school social workers are tireless advocates for the needs of our community. They work to connect families with food resources, coordinate the provision of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funds through Amazon Right Now Needs, and assist with other necessities like housing and clothing. Moreover, they provide critical mental health services to our students through small group and individual interventions. They do all of this while building relationships with staff and the communities. School social workers are important members of special education teams, often meeting with families early in the process to help gather important family input. Several weeks ago, the PRC was fortunate to sponsor a wonderful event with Arlington SEPTA and our Augmentative and Alternative (AAC) Implementation Coaches. We held a virtual supper club, with a special guest – James Falahee, an AAC user and high school student from Ann Arbor, MI. James shared his journey, along with helpful tips and suggestions for AAC users and their families, and staff who work with AAC users. He also thoughtfully responded to questions from staff, students and parents. If you missed the session, don’t miss the chance to watch the session recording of this insightful young man.
