Parent Resource Center Weekly Message: 6.16.23

Good morning! We are just about to wrap up our 22-23 academic year, and hope you all are looking forward to a wonderful summer break.

First, congratulations to our students who are graduating and/or completing their time with Arlington Public Schools – we wish each of them well in their next endeavors, and congratulate their families on this important milestone! We are excited for those of you with children who will be transitioning next year from PreK to elementary school, elementary to middle, and/or middle to high school/secondary school. Please know that the Parent Resource Center is here to support you as you plan to collaborate with your new school teams, so don’t hesitate to contact us for information or resources.

We have been grateful for the opportunity to get to know and work with many Arlington families this year, and would like to give a special shout-out to the leadership teams of the Arlington Special Education PTA (SEPTA), Arlington Special Education Advisory Committee (ASEAC), and our Special Education Parent Liaisons! It is an honor to collaborate with you and our colleagues to support Arlington students. (Speaking of Parent Liaisons – if you are interested in considering becoming a parent liaison you can learn more and volunteer at this link. Arlington SEPTA and the PRC would love to welcome you to the group, and our goal is to have at least 1 or more parent liaisons for each school and program).

We also would like to acknowledge the impactful work of our school-based colleagues – special and general education teachers, assistants, related services providers, school psychologists, school social workers, counselors, administrators, and all staff working in schools who support students.

Additionally, we’d like to thank all of our colleagues in the Office of Special Education for their partnership in supporting our work with families, especially our wonderful Co-Directors of Special Education, Dr. Kelly Krug and Ms. Heather Rothenbuescher. We are sad to bid farewell to Ms. Rothenbuescher as she heads for new adventures overseas with her family, but have been extremely grateful to both she and Dr. Krug for their steadfast support, leadership, and commitment to students, families and staff. We will miss you, Heather, and wish you all the best!

The PRC team will be taking some time off this summer, but we will be working periodically throughout the summer, so please feel free to contact us at prc@apsva.us or 703.228.7239 if you have questions, need information, or would like to schedule a consultation or visit the PRC to borrow library materials. PLEASE check out our electronic collection, too! We’ve added many e-books and audiobooks for you to access as part of your summer reading! 🙂 You can explore our collection and learn how to borrow materials at this link.

Our learning sessions will resume in September, but we will continue to post community offerings on our Events page, and you can explore our learning session videos at this link. We’d love your input as we plan for 23-24 this summer. Please share any ideas you might have for 23-24 learning session topics at this link!

Our Monday/Weekly messages will return in September. Until then, we hope the summer provides many opportunities to rest, rejuvenate, relax, and make wonderful memories with your family and friends!  Have a great summer!

Your PRC Team,

Emma Parral, Gina DeSalvo and Kathleen Donovan
