School Board Approves Washington-Lee Final Design The Arlington School Board approved the final design for adding 300 seats to Washington-Lee High School at last night’s meeting. The plan features design changes to optimize utilization of classroom space, create additional space for teacher collaboration, increase access to technology, and improve the use of common areas to enhance the learning environment. In addition, the Board approved the appointment of Dr. Casey Robinson as the new Principal of the H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program. Her appointment begins July 1. As part of last night’s meeting, a public hearing was held to receive comments on the School Board’s Proposed FY 2016 Budget. The final budget for the 2015-16 school year is scheduled to be adopted by the School Board on May 7. Monitoring Items
- ACI Advisory Committee Status Reports – The Board received updates from the Student Services and Science committees. The reports highlighted the implementation of the committee’s recommendations.
- Sustainability Update – Staff provided an update on APS sustainability efforts and initiatives. The report summarized capital projects, operations, instruction, key takeaways and next steps.
- Science Update – This report from staff included information about SOL pass rates, program successes and recommendations.
Information Items The proposed schematic design for Abingdon Elementary School was presented. The project will add 12 classrooms and 136 seats to the school and will include improvements to the existing gymnasium, kitchen, and media space, as well as enhancements for pedestrian and vehicle access to the school. The construction is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of the 2017-18 school year. The meeting began with the Board recognizing Kenmore Middle School students for their winning projects in the Caring for our Watersheds contest sponsored by Earth Force.
