There are just two weeks left in our Summer Learning series! We hope you and your student have enjoyed exploring some of these simple, mostly screen-free activities together. Whether you have completed every activity or are just getting started, every opportunity to read, explore and learn together makes a difference.
Here are a few more ideas to help keep learning going before the new school year begins.
Weekly Learning Menu
Daily Reading
Students should continue to read, or be read to, for at least 30 minutes each day.
The Arlington Central Library is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.
Reading and Language
Visit a local museum. Read exhibit labels together and talk about what they tell you. If you could write a museum label for your favorite exhibit, what would it say?
Math and Problem Solving
- Toy Train Number Line: Line up toys or blocks and count forward, backward or skip-count together.
- Measure Me! Use nonstandard units, such as hands, shoes or spoons, to measure furniture or parts of your body. Compare what is longer and what is shorter.
Science and Nature
Design and draw your own animal. It can be real or imaginary. Talk about what it eats, where it lives, how it moves and what body parts help it survive.
Social Studies and Community
Visit a neighborhood park or local landmark. Talk about why it is important to your community and what makes it a special place.
Creative Expression and Arts
Create Story Stones by drawing or painting simple pictures on rocks, such as a sun, tree or animal. Use the stones to tell a story.
- Families can also explore the National Gallery of Art through a free virtual tour.
