There are just two weeks left in our Summer Learning series! We hope you and your student have enjoyed exploring some of these simple, mostly screen-free activities together. Whether you have completed every activity or are just getting started, every opportunity to read, explore and learn together makes a difference.
Here are a few more ideas to help keep learning going before the new school year begins.
Weekly Learning Menu
Daily Reading
Students should read for at least 30 minutes each day.
The Arlington Central Library is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.
Draft a letter or postcard to a friend or family member using new vocabulary you’ve learned. Read it aloud to check for clarity before sharing it.
Math and Problem Solving
- Probability Predictions: Predict the outcomes of flipping a coin or drawing cards from a deck. Test your predictions and compare the results.
- Percent Persuasion: Compare discounts, such as 30% off a $40 item versus 15% off a $75 item. Which is the better deal? Explain your reasoning.
Social Studies and Community
Explore a museum with your family or through Google Arts & Culture. *Families should preview content to ensure it is appropriate for their student.
World Languages
Introduce yourself in the language you are learning by sharing your interests, goals and traditions. Students studying Latin can compare how identity and values were expressed in ancient Rome and today.
Creative Expression and Arts
Create a drawing or painting that tells a story without using words. Experiment with perspective, color or shading to communicate your message.
- Families can also explore the National Gallery of Art through a free virtual tour.
