There are just two weeks left in our Summer Learning series! We hope you and your student have enjoyed exploring some of these simple, mostly screen-free activities together. Whether you have completed every activity or are just getting started, every opportunity to read, explore and learn together makes a difference.
Here are a few more ideas to help keep learning going before the new school year begins.
Weekly Learning Menu
Daily Reading
Students should continue to read for at least 30 minutes each day.
The Arlington Central Library is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.
Reading and Language
Visit a local museum. Read exhibit labels together and talk about what they tell you. If you could write a museum label for your favorite exhibit, what would it say?
Math and Problem Solving
- Time Trials: Estimate how many jumping jacks you can do in 15 seconds. Try it, then predict how many you could do in 30 seconds and one minute.
- Math Talk Challenge: Which is larger – 1/2 of a pizza or 2/4 of a pizza? Explain your thinking.
Science and Nature
Observe the night sky on three clear evenings. Draw the moon’s shape and sketch any bright stars or planets you see. Compare your observations and talk about how the moon changes over time.
Social Studies and Community
Interview a family member about a favorite summer memory from their childhood. Compare it with one of your favorite summer memories.
Creative Expression and Arts
Trace the shadows of toys or other objects outside, then color and decorate your drawings.
- Families can also explore the National Gallery of Art through a free virtual tour.
