Summer Learning Week of August 3: Math Toss and more (Grades K-2)

These activities help students continue learning, exploring and creating throughout the summer.

Daily Reading

Students should read or be read to for at least 30 minutes each day.

The Arlington Central Library is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.

Reading and Language

Take a walk around your neighborhood. Read the signs you see and talk about what they mean. How many describing words can your student use for each sign?

Math and Problem Solving

• Number Walk: Count objects you see during a walk, such as birds, stop signs or flowers. Add or subtract your totals as you go.
• Math Toss: Toss a soft object back and forth. Each time someone catches it, say the next number in a skip-counting pattern by 2s, 5s or 10s.

Science and Nature

Place a small toy outside on a sunny day and observe its shadow. Move the toy to different positions or check it at different times of the day. Talk about how light creates shadows and how the sun changes their size and shape.

Social Studies and Community

Build different landforms, such as mountains, hills and valleys, using playdough or other materials.

Creative Expression and Arts

Create animal or monster masks using paper plates, markers and craft materials.
