These activities help students continue learning, exploring and creating throughout the summer.
Weekly Learning Menu
Daily Reading
Students should read for at least 30 minutes each day.
The Arlington Central Library is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.
To build reading comprehension, write simple household chores on notes for your student to read. Have your student read each note aloud, explain what it means and then complete the task.
Math and Problem Solving
- Ratio Recipe Remix: Choose a favorite recipe and double or halve it. Talk about what changes and what stays the same.
- Shopping Budget Challenge: Create a pretend budget for three items. Estimate their prices and decide which combinations fit within your budget.
Science and Nature
Take a nature walk around your neighborhood or a local park. Look for 5–10 different plants, insects or small animals. Compare their features, such as the number of legs, leaf shapes, colors or sizes, and group them based on their similarities. Talk about how scientists classify living things by observing their physical characteristics.
Social Studies and Community
Write a letter to a local government official about a community issue that is important to you. Share your ideas respectfully and explain why the issue matters.
World Languages
Listen to a song or explore a piece of artwork in the language you are learning. Describe what you hear or see. Students studying Latin can examine Roman art or poetry and compare it with modern art, music or public murals.
Creative Expression and Arts
Transform an old T-shirt into a headband, bracelet or tote bag.
- You can also explore the National Gallery of Art through a free virtual tour.
