Summer Learning Week of July 13: Summer Reading and more (Grades 9-12)

We hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer break! Each Monday through August 17, we’ll share a Weekly Learning Menu with simple, mostly screen-free activities that caregivers can enjoy with their students at home. Choose one or two activities that fit your family’s schedule and keep learning going all summer long!

Daily Reading

Join the Arlington Public Library Summer Reading Challenge and encourage your student to read, or be read to, for at least 30 minutes each day.After reading, ask your student questions such as:

• What was the most interesting part of the story?
• What surprised you?
• Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why or why not?

Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.

Math & Problem Solving

Try one of these real-world math activities:

• Budget a Day Out: Plan a hypothetical family outing or meal with a $60 budget. Research prices, calculate tax and tip, and explain spending choices.
• Linear Life Graph: Create a graph showing a real-life trend, such as hours of sleep over time or weekly screen time. Discuss what the graph shows and whether the trend is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same.
• Card Game Probability: Use a deck of cards to explore probability. Ask questions such as, “What is the probability of drawing a red card?” or “What is the probability of drawing a face card?”

World Languages

Practice language learning at home by labeling everyday objects with their names in the language your student is studying.Additional ideas include:

• Practice saying or signing the words during everyday conversations.
• For American Sign Language (ASL), sign the labels and practice phrases such as “Where is ___?” or “I need ___.”
• For Latin, identify Latin roots in everyday words (such as aquarium) and compare common household items with how similar objects were used in ancient Rome.

Creative Arts & Expression

Create a mini art installation using everyday materials found around your home or yard. Afterward, take photos and share the story behind the artwork with your family. You can also explore artwork together through the National Gallery of Art Virtual Tours.

Social Studies

Take a virtual tour of a museum through Google Arts & Culture. As you explore, discuss what you learned and what surprised you. *Please preview museum content in advance to ensure it is appropriate for your student.
