Choose one or two activities that fit your family’s schedule and keep learning going all summer long!
Weekly Learning Menu
Daily Reading
Join the Arlington Public Library Summer Reading Challenge and encourage your student to read for at least 30 minutes each day. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.
Math & Problem Solving
Choose one activity:
- What’s the Better Deal? Compare two sizes of the same product and determine which offers the better value per ounce.
- The Patterned Day: Identify patterns in your daily routine, such as chores, meals, sports, or activities. Describe or graph the pattern.
Civic Engagement
Visit one of Arlington’s more than 80 historical markers and learn why each location is significant to our community.
Science & Nature
Compare how metal and plastic conduct heat! Fill two metal spoons and two plastic spoons with warm water. Place one of each in the sun and one in the shade. After 10–15 minutes, compare their temperatures and discuss why metal heats up more quickly than plastic.
World Languages
Practice your target language during a family meal by using or signing common expressions such as “please,” “thank you,” “I am hungry,” and “more.” Students studying Latin can explore food-related Latin roots and compare Roman dining traditions with today.
Creative Arts & Expression
Create a “street art”-inspired design using stencils, markers, and bold lettering on poster board.
- You can also explore artwork together through the National Gallery of Art Virtual Tours.
