Choose one or two activities that fit your family’s schedule and keep learning going all summer long!
Weekly Learning Menu
Daily Reading
Join the Arlington Public Library Summer Reading Challenge and encourage your student to read, or be read to, for at least 30 minutes each day. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.
Reading, Language & Storytelling
Write a letter to a relative or family friend. Practice spelling, handwriting, and storytelling while sharing what you’ve been doing this summer.Visit the APS literacy resources webpage for additional literacy activities.
Math & Problem Solving
Choose one activity:
- Skip Count Walk: Count your steps by 2s, 5s, 10s, or 25s while walking. Challenge yourself by counting backward or starting from an odd number.
- Secret Number Game: Think of a number between 1 and 100 and give clues such as, “It’s greater than 30, less than 70, and a multiple of 5.” Take turns guessing.
Science & Nature
Discover how plants produce oxygen! Place a green leaf in a clear glass of water and leave it in a sunny location. Ask your student to predict what will happen. After about an hour, observe the tiny bubbles forming on the leaf and discuss why they appear. (Plants use sunlight as food, and when they do, they create oxygen, which escapes through tiny holes on the surface of the leaves and appears as bubbles when the leaf is under water.)
Community & Social Studies
Visit one of Arlington’s more than 80 historical markers and discuss why that location is important to our community.
Creative Arts & Expression
Create a comic strip about a real or imaginary summer adventure by folding a sheet of paper into panels and illustrating your story.
- You can also explore artwork together through the National Gallery of Art Virtual Tours.
