Daily Reading

Join the Arlington Public Library Summer Reading Challenge and encourage your student to read, or be read to, for at least 30 minutes each day. Students can also access digital books through APS Library Resources in Canvas.

Reading, Language & Storytelling

Practice listening for syllables. Explain that syllables are the “beats” in a word. Clap once for each syllable as you say words like hat (1), apple (2), and banana (3). Continue with other words from around your home.

Math & Problem Solving

Try one of these activities:

  • Shop at Home: Set up a pretend store using household items. Give each item a price under $1 and use real or play money to practice buying and selling.
  • Shape Hunt on the Go: While walking around your neighborhood or home, look for 2D and 3D shapes. Can your student find a rectangle, sphere, or cylinder?

Science & Nature

Look at pictures, books, or toys featuring different animals. Ask your student:

  • What covers the animal’s body—fur, feathers, scales, or skin?
  • How does that covering help the animal stay warm, dry, or safe?

Community & Social Studies

Look through family photos together and share stories about the people, places, and memories they capture.

Creative Arts & Expression

Create colorful pasta jewelry by dyeing dry pasta with food coloring and stringing the pieces into necklaces or bracelets.
