As we start the month of May, my update this week provides information on the family selection process, Standards of Learning (SOL) testing, and APS Employee Appreciation Month.
Family Selection Process Results Available Friday – Thank you for taking time to complete the selection process during the past two weeks. Your input allows us to plan effectively for the fall and ensure every student has the supports they need. The responses are being processed, and I will present the results at the May 6 School Board meeting. Families who did not respond will default to in-person instruction. The results will be posted on our website on Friday.
SOL Testing Update – As a reminder, SOL testing for this school year has not been waived and will be conducted in person at schools in May and June. Hybrid students will test on days when they are scheduled to attend school. Full-distance learning (DL) students will be scheduled to test on Mondays. Each school will communicate their individual SOL schedule with dates and times with their families. Additional information is available online.
- Families of high school students, please note that the week of 6/1-6/4, all instruction at APS high schools will be asynchronous full-distance learning in order to have staffing to support and proctor testing. Hybrid students should only come to school if they are scheduled to take an SOL test that week. Students should review their school’s specific testing schedule for details.
Employee Appreciation Month – Thank you to everyone who submitted expressions of thanks for Employee Appreciation Month. Throughout May, we will share your messages and recognize the many ways teachers and support staff have made an enormous difference in the lives of Arlington students.
- Please join us this week in thanking teachers and teaching assistants for National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3-7. Truly, there are no words that can summarize the challenges teachers have overcome to connect with students at home and in the classroom. They have pivoted from teaching in class to teaching online – in numerous forms and formats – and everything in between. None of that would be possible without the assistants, who also work tirelessly to support student learning in so many ways.
- Our students had a lot to say – and cheer – about their teachers!
- I hope you will take a moment to watch these student videos:
School Lunch Hero Day on Friday – Join us on Friday to thank your school’s food services team as part of School Lunch Hero Day. We thank the 126 staff who have served well over 2.1 million free meals this school year, to date. For the first part of the year, the meal pickups and friendly smiles from our food services staff provided an essential service and a way for students to feel connected. The full calendar of employee appreciation is available online.
Summer School Planning – We are currently finalizing plans for elementary summer school based on the staffing available and the results of the outreach conducted to families in April. Finalized plans will be communicated centrally and by individual schools, as soon as more information is available. Outreach for secondary summer school is taking place this month.Thank you to each of you – parents and guardians, even grandparents, and your extended families who have given significant time to support students in distance learning, in collaboration with teachers, while working and supporting your families. It has truly taken a village, and we thank you.
We look forward to a strong finish to the school year, and an even stronger start in the fall.
