Taylor Students Learn the Ukulele

In this episode, Snapshots talks to Taylor Elementary School Principal Harold Pellegreen and music teacher Eleyna Vernon about the schools initiative to teach students the Ukulele.

The pilot program for fifth graders teaches students an instrument that is approachable for all children at this age. Learning the ukulele challenges students to understand the concepts of pitch, tuning, chords and chord patterns at a deeper level. Each student is responsible for tuning his/her own instrument before each lesson. Playing the ukulele builds dexterity and coordination. As beginners, the students are learning and playing chords while singing along.

This approach to teaching and learning ukulele allows student progress to happen fairly quickly. After only four months of instruction once a week, the students have learned several chords, how to read tablature and are able to play many songs, including nursery rhymes and popular music.
