What steps is APS taking to improve air quality and ventilation on school buses?

posted Sept 1

Masks are required for everyone on school buses at all times, regardless of vaccination status. In accordance with the Virginia Department of Health guidance for K-12 schools, bus windows will be open to improve air flow and circulation, when it is not a safety hazard. APS bus drivers have been instructed to put all windows down at least to the midpoint when weather permits to help increase outside air circulation. A majority of APS school buses are equipped with air conditioning; however, students and parents will need to understand buses will be warmer with windows down. APS is continuing to monitor adherence to safety procedures and is reinforcing this practice with all drivers. Additionally, APS reminds families to complete the daily health screening prior to leaving home and to keep students who are ill or have COVID-like symptoms home to help protect the health and well-being of their school communities.
