Options & Transfers Application Data

Option schools/programs offer specialized educational instruction to pre-K, elementary, middle, and high school students. Families interested in an option school/program must submit an application online during a specific time period.

APS allows limited transfers between neighborhood schools, based on capacity and financial constraints. Families interested in an available school transfer must submit an online application during a specific time period.

Lotteries: APS conducts a random, double-blind lottery through SchoolMint, a 3rd party vendor, to determine admission when more applications are received than there are seats available.

Application Data: After each lottery, APS makes public application data. Please note the publication date for each option school/program or school transfer.

Waitlists: Students who applied, but were not selected through the lottery process, are placed in numerical order on a waitlist. Waitlists continually change as seats become available.  Families who have applied to an option school or for a school transfer can view up-to-date waitlist information by logging into the online application portal.

Seats Offered: The number of seats available at each school and/or program are based on the Superintendent’s Annual Update to the School Board on enrollment and projections.

Number of Applicants: The number of students who applied to an option school/program or for a school transfer during open the application window.

For additional information or questions, please contact the APS Welcome Center at 703-228-8000 or schooloptions@apsva.us.
