Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

AAC means all of the ways that someone communicates besides talking. People of all ages can use AAC. 'Augmentative' means to add to someone's speech. 'Alternative' means to be used instead of speech. (ASHA.org)

A student may need AAC if:

  • They can’t depend on their spoken language to communicate
  • They understand language, but have limited spoken words
  • Use spoken language, but much of their speech is difficult to understand
  • Their language consists mainly of nouns/labels or repeated words or phrases (scripts)
