Due to resource and staffing considerations, APS will not be able to offer the following Elementary Enrichment Programs this summer: Global Village Summit, Fun with Coding, Math Academy and Summer Laureate.
This decision was based on increasing challenges staffing summer school programs as well as anticipated budget reductions for the 2020-21 school year. While these are difficult decisions, the changes allow APS to continue providing high-quality teachers and staff for its Summer Strengthening Program and serving students who need summer instruction the most.
The APS Summer Strengthening Program will continue to be offered for elementary students who are below grade-level in reading and/or math who need additional time and exposure to grade level standards. Enrollment is by teacher and principal recommendation only. Students who are eligible to enroll will be notified during the Parent-Teacher conferences March 5-6.
Staff are working closely with Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to identify similar offerings and will communicate those alternatives to families prior to the DPR summer camp registration which begins on February 12. DPR offers fee reductions for eligible students, making these options comparable in price to APS offerings.
We encourage families to plan accordingly and not wait until APS summer school recommendations have been made to register for a camp through the County, since these camps do fill quickly. If a student registers for camp and is subsequently recommended for Summer School, DPR will provide a full refund (minus a cancellation fee)
Fees for pre-K – grade 12 strengthening programs will increase from $100 to $150 (students receiving free or reduced price meals will continue to pay $56).
