To help ensure safe and secure learning environments, our schools are equipped with a range of physical security tools and technologies that support day-to-day operations and emergency preparedness.

We are committed to using these systems responsibly and transparently to help protect students, staff, and visitors while maintaining welcoming and supportive school environments.

Enhancing Physical Security: Technology and Infrastructure

  • Significant investments in cutting-edge technology to mitigate risks within our schools.
  • $2.1 million CIP approved for critical notification systems upgrades at nine schools (2025).
  • Completed security vestibules and entrance renovations across APS.
  • $303,625 VDOE School Security Grant funds utilized for:
    • New video surveillance cameras (primarily elementary schools).
    • Access control improvements.
    • Critical notification system upgrades.
    • New handheld radios.
    • New security podiums (comprehensive high schools).
    • Visitor management system upgrades and new signage (APS-wide).
    • Data-driven security camera analysis resulting in ~$225,000 savings over 5 years, and additional savings to other APS departments.
